‘The three great elemental sounds in nature
are the sound of rain,
the sound of wind in a primeval wood,
and the sound of outer ocean on a beach.’

‘To the great tree-loving fraternity we belong. We love trees with universal and unfeigned love, and all things that do grow under them or around them
— the whole leaf and root tribe.’

Hold on to what is good, Even if it’s a handful of earth. Hold on to what you believe, Even if it’s a tree that stands by itself. Hold on to what you must do, Even if it’s a long way from here. Hold on to your life, Even if it’s easier to let go. Hold on to my hand, Even if I’ve gone away from you.

“This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor is ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloaming, on sea and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls.”
~John Muir

“As long as I live, I’ll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I’ll interpret the rocks, learn the language of flood, storm, and the avalanche. I’ll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens, and get as near the heart of the world as I can”.
~John Muir

Winter Solstice is upon us in the northern hemisphere.
Our Earth has reached a transition point in its journey around the Sun (far right in the graphic above). Here in the north, our days have been getting shorter and shorter since summer. But now, the light begins to return to us. Our days will gradually lengthen and lighten until Summer Solstice in June (far left in the graphic).
At Winter Solstice, our ancestors paused to celebrate this seasonal shift and the return of life giving sunlight. Now is a time for earthy rituals.
Light a candle, say a prayer, walk in nature and offer our Earth and Sun gratitude for the alchemical magic of sunlight, water and soil that sustains us all.

We have a beautiful mother
Her hills are buffaloes; Her buffaloes hills.
We have a beautiful mother
Her oceans are wombs; Her wombs oceans.
We have a beautiful mother
Her teeth the white stones at the edge of the water;
The summer grasses her plentiful hair.
We have a beautiful mother
Her green lap immense
Her brown embrace eternal
Her blue body everything we know.
