In the Belly

February 1, 2021 By Nancy L Leave a Comment

in the belly
of the mother
seeds are stirring
shhh, listen.

life is awakening
in the body of her
the sacred wheel
turns toward spring.

There is natural magic afoot right now. It is there, running just beneath the surface. Can you feel it? All winter long, Mama Earth holds the seeds of spring safe for us. As the cold wind blows and the snow piles up, the Mother holds them safe in her soil body.

Then, in early February, as the wheel of the year slowly turns towards spring, the seeds begin to stir. Life is reawakening in the ground of the Mother. Imbolc has quietly arrived.

Imbolc was a ritual feast time for the ancient Celtic tribes. Their legends tell us of the Cailleach — the divine hag Goddess who rules over winter and death. The Cailleach is said to gather firewood for the rest of the winter on Imbolc. If the Cailleach wishes to make winter last a lot longer, she will make sure that the weather on Imbolc is bright and sunny, so she can gather plenty of firewood. But, if Imbolc is a day of foul weather, it means the Cailleach is asleep and winter is almost over. This is the origin of modern Groundhog Day.

The Cailleach is the sacred Earth Mother Goddess in her bare winter form. She is is also the Bone Mother who collects the bones of the animals that die in the winter. The Bone Mother sings and prays over the bones of the animals all winter long. She does this out of love, so that the animals will cross over and be able to return as new life in the spring.

Celebrate!
Spring is on its way.

🌱

Note: Imbolc means “in the belly”. It is an old Irish word that honors the pregnant ewes carrying new life in their wombs at this time of year. Imbolc is traditionally celebrated at the halfway point between winter solstice and spring equinox.

Breathing Starlight

November 18, 2020 By Nancy L Leave a Comment

“You know why trees smell the way they do?” Murphy asked, looking up from her hammering.

“Sap?” Logan guessed. “Chlorophyll?”

Murphy shook her head. “Stars. Trees breathe in starlight year after year, and it goes deep into their bones. So when you cut a tree open, you smell a hundred years’ worth of light. Ancient starlight that took millions of years to reach earth. That’s why trees smell so beautiful and old.”

Beltane Blessings

May 1, 2020 By Nancy L Leave a Comment

Beltane Blessing to you on this beautiful spring day. ❤️

The Celtic tribes celebrated Beltane with bonfires, dancing, maypoles and ritual sex as well as plentiful food and drink. They celebrated in honor of the sacred union of the masculine and feminine – a union which can occur either with a partner or within one’s self.

The merging of masculine and feminine energies allows something new to be born. Sacred union is natural magic.

This Beltane, make time to celebrate and DANCE!

May Day, or Beltane, is the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. This date marked the beginning of summer for the ancient Celts. It was a day of dance and song – a celebration in gratitude for fertile fields sprouting with new life.

Blessings to our beautiful Earth on this magical Beltane cross-quarter day. So grateful for our original Mama, the planet who birthed us all.

A Fairy Guide to Life

March 2, 2017 By Nancy L Leave a Comment

by John Anster Fitzgerald (1819-1906)
Fairy Banquet – John Anster Fitzgerald (1819-1906)

Live in a state of gratitude for our Earth.

Nature’s abundance flows to those who adore and honor her.

If you must worship something, make it GREEN – the green of nature.

Fight against Mother Nature at your own peril.

Everything ebbs and flows. Learn to flow like the waves.

Look for Magic everywhere. Expect it. Watch for it.

Love heals most wounds. Love it all, every moment.

Honor every season of the Sun.

Dance with the rhythms of the Moon.

When things are shaky, scary or chaotic, go to ground.

Allow the Earth to hold you and support you.

Pause every day and listen to Nature. Wisdom abides there.

Each animal and plant has a wisdom of its own. Look for it.

Beauty is all around us. Pay attention!

Foment joy wherever and whenever possible.

Without joy, there’s no reason to be here.

Do not fear death. It is merely another adventure.

If in doubt, dance!
